I have to agree with Sacto on this. A beater DD is great for doing all-around activity. Our DD was cheap, is reliable and FWD, seats 5 people, has rear seats that fold down, can get dinged in the city without aggravation, gets 30mpg, and is cheaper to maintain and insure than the 60k on my Z.
It may be perfect for your situation given that you are probably a student and apparently live with or near your parents. A 300 can easily be a practical DD for a college kid or young adult. It's not practical for someone with more responsibilities in life. It really is that simple.
